Shopify vs WooCommerce
The important choice is how you want to run your store—not how many features appear on a checklist.
Our editorial view
A managed commerce platform is a sensible starting point when you want fewer infrastructure decisions. A WordPress-based store can suit a business that already works in WordPress and has a reliable maintenance process. Neither model removes the work of selling: product information, fulfillment, customer service, and demand still need an owner.
| Decision | Shopify | WooCommerce |
|---|---|---|
| Foundation | Managed commerce platform | Ecommerce built on WordPress |
| Infrastructure | Platform-managed hosting | Choose hosting and a maintenance arrangement |
| Budget questions | Plan, apps, theme, and payment-related fees | Hosting, extensions, development, and maintenance |
| Practical fit | Teams prioritizing a consolidated setup | Teams wanting WordPress-based customization |
The cost that is easy to miss
Compare a year of operating expenses rather than an advertised entry price. Make a list of must-have features, such as subscriptions, special shipping rules, or accounting integration. Check whether each requires a separate app or extension. Include implementation time and recurring support. We do not list prices here because plans, markets, and billing terms change; check the final vendor checkout before purchasing.
A decision scenario: a small handmade shop
If you sell a limited catalogue and handle the website yourself, reducing maintenance may be worth more than extensive customization. If your existing WordPress site drives enquiries and you have trusted technical help, extending that site may be more practical. These are scenarios, not observed customer outcomes.
Before you choose
Write down your checkout, shipping, tax, and payment requirements. Confirm availability for your country, test the mobile buying flow in a trial or demo, and check how to export your product and order data. A feature that exists in the ecosystem is not necessarily included in your plan.
When to pause
If you have not decided what to sell or how to fulfill orders, choosing a platform will not settle those questions. Validate the offer first. For a complex migration, obtain a concrete migration plan before changing platforms.
